I’ve seen brights in the color blocking stage and I’ve seen head-to-toe pastels, but pastels + brights is ready to make a grand entrance! Into my life that is. How about you join me?

(Big thanks to Andrew Fillmore Photography!!)

Spring makes me this happy. I’m finally beginning to feel comfortable in brights, but I’m waiting for Summer to bust out the vibrant hues. For the Spring prelude, it’s a toss up of the two. Stay tuned as the color blocking saga continues…

Yes- Crystal Renn gained fame as a size 12/14 plus size model, but now holds the “supermodel” title at a healthy size 8. Does this mean she has ‘betrayed’ the plus size community? It has been noted that in an exclusive interview with Radar Online, Editor-in-chief of PLUS Model Magazine Madeline Jones claims that “Once she [Crystal Renn] got down to a size 10 she lost the support of a lot of people. We’re disappointed because she was our star fighting for equality and fashion for us, and now she’s going to their side.” Yet- the interview is nowhere to be found online. Hm…

Let’s not focus on Crystal Renn’s weight this go-round. I take issue with the wave of hypocritical bullying that sets focus on her body when she is striving to be healthy. When someone we idolize changes course in their life, they may no longer fall in line with our beliefs. That can be disheartening…

Within seconds of discovering Renn’s newest spread in the 2012 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue- I got a little choked up. I view Sports Illustrated as a “dood’s magazine.” One that definitely covers an array of sports (even women’s sports!), but once a year wraps their pages in nearly nude women for the ‘pleasure’ of men- its main demographic. Something completely unnecessary for the already sultry Crystal Renn.

I sat back, expecting to see Renn placed in overtly sexual poses. I would mark her name off my list of trail blazers, and add her to the insurmountable pile of icons that sold their integrity to the green devil. Then go about my business.

The photos and poses in her Sports Illustrated spread are surprisingly less sexual than my thoughts had proposed. I was expecting the proverbial knees spread over the sand, arms behind her head, spilt boobs pose. Yea- you know which one I’m talkin’ about.

I am now trying to see her objectives rather than the objectification of her body. She is a size 6/8 and was offered to model for a notable men’s magazine. A special issue that usually calls for incredibly skinny women with one body type and one skin pigment. Outside of the sexualization of a sport’s magazine- I can see where this is a successful step for women of that in between size range. The healthy one that seems to have been lost alongside much of culture’s morality regarding women. I suppose you can add me to that list of slightly disheartened, who’s still trying to find some light in this tunnel…

Tell us what you think of former plus size model Crystal Renn’s latest shoot in Sports Illustrated Magazine….

There is a valley of opportunities set in a day. Thousands of seconds that you can use to belittle your every physical “flaw.” Or thousands of seconds that you can use to set up a sermon in your mind. Stop allowing your eyes to skip over your body, scanning for blemishes. You have the chance to put a kickstand on your self doubts! What’s your choice?

Every year, the National Organization for Women puts on a three day event in Hollywood, California. Women of all shapes and sizes converge to help each other send their body the message of love. As well as publicly promote a healthy body image for everyone, especially plus size women. “Love Your Body Day” is held from October 21-23 this year, and will entertain Meghan McCain as the celebrity host.

In honor of Love Your Body Day, and doing so everyday, I must tell you about a woman that truly inspires me. Sonya Renee is a performance poet, published author, actress, educator and activist. This year Sonya founded a movement that has really taken hold of my heart, and my body. “The Body is Not an Apology” movement  has become a healing resource for women and men. Teaching people “…that each time someone unapologetically owns their beauty, loves their scars, they in turn give us permission to do the same!” Check out the poem that started it all…

For me, as a plus size woman who has struggled with the way I perceive myself, I also decided to stop apologizing for my body. To stop feeling guilty for the lines, marks, rolls, blemishes that tell the story of my own struggle. I decided it was time to kick down the fear of showing off my real body, and start loving my body for what it is. Right now, in this moment, the only thing we can change about our body is the way we treat it, see it, and love it. So stop apologizing and start loving everything that you are.

 With love,

CaseyK

I Say Paint it Red!

27 Aug 2011

Is your closet looking a bit gloomy, lately?

Studies show that the color red has abilities beyond what the eye concludes. Red is not only an alluring color, attracting other’s energy, but also a great way to give yourself that confidence boost! To me…it’s downright sexy! Now, I’m not one to snap into many bright colored ensembles, but red just does me in. Drawing up a bold feeling. A classic confidence that makes me feel as though I’m gliding above the streets, with a Mary Poppins sort of sass.

Of course, as with any color, over doing it can also intimidate your senses and stir up feelings of those around you.   Besides the rare occasion of going all red, or whatever the color may be. I tend to stick with pops of color, mixed with neutrals. This allows me to pull attention to certain areas of my body that I enjoy highlighting. Not only letting a plus size gal feel the strengths of a colorful outfit,
but also sexy in her curves.

Once your psyche is triggered by whatever hues you have fashioned together, particular senses within yourself become heightened. So the colors you wear become your feelings.

Say you’re feeling anxious lately…think about adding some blue to
your daily threads. Cool colors like blue and green calm your nerves,
creating serenity and nurturing your connection with the earth.

I’ve personally been sticking with brighter, warmer colors to pep up
my plus size style and my motivation.

Oranges, reds, and yellows! Yellow is an especially uplifting hue of
emotions. When you need a boost out of gloomy, yellow draws up the
optimistic side of your thoughts. Similar to the sun, yellow may offer
healing qualities when you need it most. :]

With the crazy days of life, we don’t often think about the way in
which our mood is affected by our style. How easily we can change our
spirits with a bright top, a cute belt, and a smile!

So enjoy this weekend with a lil’ color.

Yours, truly! xoxo

I woke up this morning to the feel of sweat sliding over my temples. I looked up at the ceiling, and then around to my window draperies. Nothing in my bedroom was swaying in its usual beat from the air. Apparently, the swamp cooler had taken the day off. So basically, I woke up to the death of Summer.

After a few hours spent sweating over a broken pump, I finally stumbled to find a seat on the roof top. For the first time this Summer, I begged for Autumn to just get here already. It’s funny how your feelings can change, once your comforts are taken away. Like cool air.

Looks as though my wish is going to take a bit to come true. Even so, plus-size fall fashion trends are already very much present. I’m hoping that if I start shopping now…it’ll seal that wish with a kiss. ;]

Slouchy plus-size jackets and blazers are definitely one of my favorite trends for this Fall. To me, a woman that can pull off an androgynous look, says she’s classy and kind of bold. So with a stealthy sneak into my brother’s  closet, I yanked this charcoal gray suit jacket to allow my own masculinity out for a stroll.

This look also suits my next favorite plus-size trend for the Fall season: minimalism! Life and fashion are going back to black…and white. Timeless neutrals paired to contrast and compliment each other. Fall 2011 is introducing simplistic pieces made of good quality. Think about snagging a few staple items for your wardrobe. Things you can mix, match, and cycle through in a still wavering economy.

My favorite head to toe black ensemble…

Personally, I’d sway around in black all year long. Well…if it weren’t for animal prints, that is.

For Fall 2011 plus-size trends, I’m seeing a lot of these fierce prints popping up in the fashion world.

I love being able to easily go from one event to the next without having to completely change looks. Some days just don’t leave us with enough time to play chameleon. Instead, try switching up your outfit with one small, swift change. When the work day is done, ditch the business jacket. Go more casual with an animal print cardigan, or a smooth leopard print scarf to add some spice without over dressing.

As studs are jumping up in the Fall trend ranks, so are neon colors! Two things that can suprisingly become a good match…

In the next couple weeks, we”ll see even more Fall 2011 plus-size fashion trends emerge! I have a feeling we’ll get their attention first. So stayed tuned, as the plus-size trends keep a comin’ :]

Over in this corner, weighing in at 180 pounds, as a lifetime ginger, we have…me. You’re average size 12/14 woman, with hips that stick out like wheels on a bicycle. My body is that of your typical American Woman.

Unfortunately, I spent my entire life up until a couple of years ago, hating this body…hating my body.

(one of my first shots by Marc Andrew Fitzgerald Photography)

Then, last year, I fell into plus size modeling through a wonderful group of people in the local fashion scene. I’ll be honest, at first I was scared. All of those old insecurities began to repeat in my mind…over and over again. For me though, it was the people that made everything seem wonderful.

I have met and continued a connection with almost every photographer, makeup artist, and model that I have worked with in the past. I’ve even been welcomed by professionals from across the nation, via facebook and other networking sites.

In the plus size modeling community, it’s a family.

With other big plans in tow, I feel as though being a plus size model has allowed me an opportunity to help young girls love their bodies as they are. Being a teen is hard enough, without waging a war on your self-esteem.

Curvy models have a better chance than anyone, to teach and campaign for girls and women alike, letting them know that we are unique. Our bodies are unique. We are not created without flaws, and we definitely do not all grow up to be a perfect size 2.

As sisters we can help each other overcome body hate. Teach younger girls that physical traits are not fair game for bullying, and that not everything you read in Seventeen Magazine is true.

Fall in love with your body today…I promise, you’re beginning a revolution.

…”FAT!” I say. Just as my Aunt shooshes me with an, “at ta tah da.” As her hand slides up to separate these words from her two young daughters sitting next to me, she whispers, “we don’t say that word.” As if I had just made a slur, or deemed someone “mentally challenged,” in less favorable words.

So in a very matter of fact way, I make note that I was indeed, fat. I am fat.

Well…I prefer squishy. Regardless, I find it more offensive to tie an anvil to the 60% of the population that is overweight, and just throw them to the sea. Pretending that this group doesn’t exist, by removing the word from our mouths, and them from our thoughts.

That is, until one of these plus-size beauties pops up in the media to represent the whole of us. Reminding humanity that this is what we look like. Not who we are.

The fashion industry is opening their door, more and more lately. Big time magazines are featuring “larger” models, and even shocking the world with spots on the cover. Yet, they are of course, flawless, thanks to over re-touching. They are more voluptuous than your typical straight size model, but still fit, and still photographed at their most flattering angle, to appear slender.

In many ways, this saddens me. Gives me hope at the same time, but breaks my heart for young girls and women, like myself. Women who still do not fit the mold that we see plastered over billboards, televisions, and magazines. Even if it is now including some plus-size ladies.

I have a difficult time as a plus-size model for this reason. I aspire to be out there, working. To be such a good model, that I’m constantly shooting, and showing other women that this body…this body is beautiful. This body is not fit, is not proportioned, does not include typical long hair, and seductive lips. This body is just as imperfect, and perfect as any other woman’s body, because that is what other females need to see in the media. To know that their bodies are ever changing, but in this moment, they are gorgeous! Maybe not as physically healthy as they are told to be, but sane, at the very least. That even after years of being saturated with weight-loss commercials, criticism, and a constant desire to be something that we are not…we can finally get a message of acceptance. So that we may accept ourselves, as we are, in this moment. Beautiful in our flaws, and loving in our every thought.

To Beth Ditto & Tess Munster….for living outside the box, and being damn good at it!

~ You have to accept whatever comes and the only important thing is that you meet it with the best you have to give. ~ Eleanor Roosevelt

Enjoy every moment that comes, dear ladies. :]

Don’t you just melt when your eyes stretch into the window of gleaming boutique, and as you enter, you fall head over heels in love with that piece?

That one dress, tunic top, or skirt that reaches out and clutches your sight with every fiber. As your fingers clip through each version of your meant-to-be outfit, you suddenly fall weak when…when…it doesn’t come in my size?!?!  You spin around, breathe back the angst, and jet your tush outta that joint.

Heartbreak is not worth waiting around for..

As far as these clothing company’s claiming they do not harbor the clientele for plus sizes. Pfft!

Lies, lies, lies, from the mouth of a two headed bad business dragon!

The more important question: where are all the flattering fashions for curvy women?!? Do manufactures have a super secretive chart that determines once you’re over a size 8, you must be a 65 year old woman who wears visors, and likes flower print?

Full figured individuals make up something around 60 percent of our population. A little over half of those are women. Women who have taste, money, and love for the body we want to dress in fabulous threads.

Part of me realizes that we are amid a revolution of larger women that just want the same freedom to express themselves through fashion. This takes time, and a lot of effort on our part. I say no excuses though! No excuses should be warranted by an industry that was designed around the idea of pleasing the consumer. When we are so not pleased with our options.

So, for my love of socially responsible companies that produce well made plus size clothing at a reasonable price; I want to spotlight those that are trying! Through them, we will grow, and if we keep raising our voices, other designers will follow!

My personal favorites…

Torrid! For the edgier curves…and in honor of expression.

Michael Kors! (Sometimes found at TjMaxx, and other discount stores) Because I have never found better fitting pants, and career wear.

Lane Bryant! More fashionable fits for the misses, and more color than I have ever seen in one retail shop!

SWAK Designs…really needs no explanation. Please just hit their website immediately!

Check out others like: IGIGI, for the fancy, and Avenue/Jessica London, Woman Within, Roamans, and Evan’s (sooo hot!)

I’m dashing around town like I’ve just stepped into an ABBA song, and I have exactly 2 minutes and 47 seconds to find the most perfect, the most colorful, the most seductive dress for summer’s first most fun weekend. I had spent all winter then spring draped in earthy tones that at times made me wonder if I was actually turning into a Red Leaf Maple Tree. Or did I just look like one?

Four hours later, I’m slipped into a knit tank dress that felt like if the little hairs on my skin could have sex with the fibers in my gentle new dress, they so would be! And I couldn’t have been more comfortable. =)

And then…baaam! Like a blade through a grass patch. I felt the wrath of the fashion goddesses as I flip through my good friend’s camera, realizing I LOOKED LIKE A BLOATED PEACOCK!

All I knew that night was that I was having fun and I felt good, so I attempted to let all those worries about my peacock dress disappear with the sunset. As any wise woman would, I learned from my color conundrum and have moved on to sizzling new summer styles. To more ahem…flattering ones, of course.

When hurriedly shopping for bold new dresses, because you’ve been listening to 80’s music all day, and can’t simply find anything to wear to tonight’s soirée…take a friend! Good God, please take a friend!

I now know that before one dives head first into a rainbow; it’s best to peek at a color wheel, or at least the latest issue of ELLE Magazine.

Apparently, just because two or three colors were sloshed onto a cute v-neck, knee length summer dress…does not mean they compliment your skin, or your hair the same way they compliment each other.

Hello!! I’m Casey King, and I’m here to make friends with you, and talk about your fashion favorites while I share some of my secrets to wearing curves, out loud.

So, in honor of being brave and trying new colors, or accessories, or bright red lipstick…

Here are this weekend’s summer loves..

Hello yellow!

these give a whole new meaning to shoes a girl would die for…

simply can’t live without this seasons tribal colors!

To you…..and to being bold!

vogue italia plus size models on cover

Credit: vogue.it

Vogue Italia has boldly ramped up their efforts to display the unadulterated beauty of the curvy woman.  By featuring 3 plus size models, or should I say goddesses, on the cover of their June 2011 magazine, they’re exclaiming- size 2 may be cute but size 14 is drop dead sexy.  Featured cover plus size models are Tara Lynn, Candice Huffine and Robyn Lawley. The photographs are masterfully shot in black and white by world famous photographer Steven Meisel.

The setting is a Victorian mansion and it adds to the allure of each shot. The spread is sexually suggestive, with a heavy infusion of sensuality. These are plus sized women of power and substance with bountiful levels of confidence.  For me, it’s less about the fashion and more about shapes.  When you’re getting smacked with curves that are in all the right places, it’s easy to forget about the clothes.  But we do love the clothes! Featured items-  Sexy corset with suspender belt, Intimissimi; mules from Agent Provocateur and bra/ panties from our intimates favorite, Hips & Curves.

I invite you to view the Vogue Italia plus size models pictures spread and comment back with thoughts.  Do you think Vogue Italia, with this photo spread and their Vogue Curvy site, appropriately promote the plus size woman?
