Slide into a Sheath Dress!

We all have guilty pleasures. There is no denying that!

Seeing as I’m home bound these days, getting life in order for a two month train trip all about the West coast. I’ve found a little freedom from thought inside the world of my Netflix queue. Lately, my guilty pleasure has been all wrapped up in this t.v. show called, “Drop Dead Diva.” A very girly, a very silly show, that I wouldn’t normally indulge in. Yet, I am hooked on the main character, “Jane Bingum,” and her style! A fierce plus size woman, that incorporates classic career wear with eye popping accessories and does it oh, so, very well.

Jane, like myself, knows a good thing when she sees it. The figure flattering sheath dress in plus sizes, doesn’t fall short of that list. A major must have trend for Fall 2011! Sheath dresses are made with the hour glass figure in mind, but don’t let that deter you. I just love this dress when paired with a belt, to bring attention to all different shaped waists.

There is one rule in the fashion of our lives. Never say never to something you love! Instead, find a way to tweak it so it works for you, and then flaunt it! Anything is possible with a little creativity.

That’s the fun part with this dress trend. You can take a well cut plus size sheath dress, and either wear it alone, or stir up your look with a neutral jacket or cardigan, an smaller purse, maybe a clutch. Then dazzle your way up with a few jewels. Wa-la!

This slimming dress is one of those crucial pieces in any plus size woman’s wardrobe. When you’re feeling classic, you can snatch a vintage clutch and some pearls, keeping it simple! Dinner party, the office, a work function, girl’s night out. I just love how versatile this plus size fashion favorite is! I actually picked up my own sheath dress recently. No way could I resist slipping into it for a few photos. This one’s a keeper!

Is your closet looking a bit gloomy, lately?

Studies show that the color red has abilities beyond what the eye concludes. Red is not only an alluring color, attracting other’s energy, but also a great way to give yourself that confidence boost! To me…it’s downright sexy! Now, I’m not one to snap into many bright colored ensembles, but red just does me in. Drawing up a bold feeling. A classic confidence that makes me feel as though I’m gliding above the streets, with a Mary Poppins sort of sass.

Of course, as with any color, over doing it can also intimidate your senses and stir up feelings of those around you. Besides the rare occasion of going all red, or whatever the color may be. I tend to stick with pops of color, mixed with neutrals. This allows me to pull attention to certain areas of my body that I enjoy highlighting. Not only letting a plus size gal feel the strengths of a colorful outfit,
but also sexy in her curves.

Once your psyche is triggered by whatever hues you have fashioned together, particular senses within yourself become heightened. So the colors you wear become your feelings.

Say you’re feeling anxious lately…think about adding some blue to
your daily threads. Cool colors like blue and green calm your nerves,
creating serenity and nurturing your connection with the earth.

I’ve personally been sticking with brighter, warmer colors to pep up
my plus size style and my motivation.

Oranges, reds, and yellows! Yellow is an especially uplifting hue of
emotions. When you need a boost out of gloomy, yellow draws up the
optimistic side of your thoughts. Similar to the sun, yellow may offer
healing qualities when you need it most. :]

With the crazy days of life, we don’t often think about the way in
which our mood is affected by our style. How easily we can change our
spirits with a bright top, a cute belt, and a smile!

So enjoy this weekend with a lil’ color.

Bend the Plus Size Trends!

You know when you say something that maybe you weren’t quite ready to say, but it felt right in that moment? Then later on, through retrospect, you feel silly.

Yea… that’s kinda how I feel right now, as I lay on the grass, writing this in 85 degree sunshine. I’m wondering what I was thinking when I prematurely started talking and writing about summer hitting the road. See, I live in a place where the summers are mild and winter tends to kick all the other seasons out of bed a lil’ early.

With 95 degrees of burning rays projected for the high today…I’m ditching the calendar! And allowing myself to be drenched in everything summer!

Maybe I’m just a last minute kind of lady, but I’ve decided against letting the likes of cardigans and closed toed heels anywhere near my daydreams for a while. Instead, I’m holding onto empire dress lines and opening a window into all of my favorite plus size trends of the moment.

Like this one…

Belts! These waist cinchers never lose my fancy. And the color black is not a seasonal thing for me. It’s more like that go-to girlfriend that you pick up when life becomes a craze. A lifetime necessity. This time though, things were a little different…

Geometric everything is hot this summer, and I kinda got a little hot when I found this piece at Savers thrift store for only 5 bucklings.

I slipped my new geo-skirt over head, cinched it with a belt, and delicately shaded my eyes with vintage inspired sunglasses.

My roommate threw on some Dianne Reeves as we rolled through downtown with the windows up. Life felt like it was happening in slow motion. Like my animal print belt and movie star glasses gave me the curves of Mae West and a bit of Jane Russell’s sass.

For a minute there, it felt like we were just ridin’ through New York City…without a worry in our hearts…

The weekend has finally popped in for a visit, and I don’t know about you but I feel oh, so, very alive!

We have sweltering summer digits in full bloom again, and I say we soak it all in before the dog days are really over. So in the spirit of a good sunshine season, and an exciting weekend that awaits…

I can’t help but keep a couple softer colors in my closet for summer evenings out. When I slip into a plus-size vintage dress, the fabric always allows me to feel so delicate and fresh.

Summer Glam & Gowns!

Hello Hollywood Glam! You’ve caught my affection, and I’m imagining that this will be a never ending love affair.

I’ve been swooped into a swoony bit of obsession for the 1930’s to 1940’s, and everything to do with the leading ladies of the time. I keep catching myself practically gawking through the big screen at the beauty and elegance, but mostly their stunning way of dress.

There is something so classy in how these women will grace a room, embellished with glistening jewels, and then glide towards the camera, swaying in a floor length satin gown. Stealing the moment of an entire audience, eyes swollen in awe.

Absolutely breathtaking.

A classic style, that rested on the idea of highlighting the alluring curves of a gal’s body. The sorts of ideology that I’m sure all of us plus size women wouldn’t mind seeing reappear.

Through the years though, our daily attire has transitioned into more casual frocks to accommodate our pratical lifestyles. Yet, there are still those times that call for an extravagant gown, with sparkling accessories, and hair that would impress any Hollywood hair stylist!

Hmm….I’m thinking it’s time to slip into a sensual gown for a wedding, perhaps? Or a magical evening with a swanky social event. Maybe an awards show party with your friends, where you all dress up as your favorite starlett. I’m personally hoping a glamorous night of cocktails, a quellazaire in hand, and sassy chats will actualize sometime very soon!

I really wouldn’t mind any excuse to dress up in a sexy evening gown and go all out. Thank the fashion world that nowadays, plus size gowns are still chic and comfortable. No more corsets and petticoats, ladies.

A Dress for Every Shape, Under $20!

As a plus size gal, I know that it is nearly impossible to walk into a shop, yank a dress off the rack, and strut out of there without having to jet back for any exchanges. One…because that is stealing! ;] Kidding…kidding…

In all seriousness though; we have curves! And a woman’s body is not a cookie cutter shape made from another. Most clothing, on the other hand, feels that way. So after many spins between the dressing room and apparel racks, you start to pick up on what styles are most flattering for your shape. For example, I love making eyes with v-neck dresses and a cinched waist to accentuate my neckline and high hips. I especially can’t get enough of the sexy cuts on these summer season dresses! Maxing out my sweeping curves in a maxi dress. Or kickin’ my heels around town in a lightweight cocktail dress.

There will never be too many dresses in this world. So, for my fellow plus size beauties, I’ve gone on a quest to find you some inexpensive dresses, made to suit all sorts of womanly figures! Uh…and did I mention they are all under $20 bucks?

Time to stop tip-toeing around the summer dress section, and go find what style really works for your body. Then go a lil’ wild for a day. If you think you can’t pull that print off….just get over your yourself right this second, and do it!

In the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson, “Always do what you are afraid to do.”

When Size Really Does Matter: Plus-Size Shops that Care!

Don’t you just melt when your eyes stretch into the window of gleaming boutique, and as you enter, you fall head over heels in love with that piece?

That one dress, tunic top, or skirt that reaches out and clutches your sight with every fiber. As your fingers clip through each version of your meant-to-be outfit, you suddenly fall weak when…when…it doesn’t come in my size?!?! You spin around, breathe back the angst, and jet your tush outta that joint.

Heartbreak is not worth waiting around for..

As far as these clothing company’s claiming they do not harbor the clientele for plus sizes. Pfft!

Lies, lies, lies, from the mouth of a two headed bad business dragon!

The more important question: where are all the flattering fashions for curvy women?!? Do manufactures have a super secretive chart that determines once you’re over a size 8, you must be a 65 year old woman who wears visors, and likes flower print?

Full figured individuals make up something around 60 percent of our population. A little over half of those are women. Women who have taste, money, and love for the body we want to dress in fabulous threads.

Part of me realizes that we are amid a revolution of larger women that just want the same freedom to express themselves through fashion. This takes time, and a lot of effort on our part. I say no excuses though! No excuses should be warranted by an industry that was designed around the idea of pleasing the consumer. When we are so not pleased with our options.

So, for my love of socially responsible companies that produce well made plus size clothing at a reasonable price; I want to spotlight those that are trying! Through them, we will grow, and if we keep raising our voices, other designers will follow!

My personal favorites…

Torrid! For the edgier curves…and in honor of expression.

Michael Kors! (Sometimes found at TjMaxx, and other discount stores) Because I have never found better fitting pants, and career wear.

Lane Bryant! More fashionable fits for the misses, and more color than I have ever seen in one retail shop!

Excited that the days are finally warm and full of sunshine! On the other hand, my never-ending mission: finding stylish summer dresses that fit into the day job lifestyle, and don’t leave me icky-sticky by the end of the day!

Takin’ it to the Maxi!

For me, summer is described in one word….Sexy! From sultry nights out in strappy heels to days spent in cascading dresses. Summer is when all my senses reemerge from their winter hibernation. And well…it’s no Minneapolis here, but we sure cherish any chance to feel something other than teeth chattering, neck clinching, shivering cold.

Now that summer is in high speed, it’s time to get your sexy on! What better way to do so than in a seductive maxi dress?

A dress that delicately hitches a ride with your hips through every step and is perfectly suited for any event! I love the way a knit maxi smoothly hugs my skin for a fun day at the park or a festival, and with the right accessories I feel just as delicious heading over to an evening barbecue.

The maxi dress is definitely a staple in my summer wardrobe, and hopefully soon you’ll be struttin’ your curves in a maxi too! (it’s not too late!)
