Headless Housewife!

07 Oct 2011

It’s time to get creative!

You could go another round picking out a last minute costume that’s been cycled through the stores, year after year. Or, you could take one of those cliche Halloween costumes and make it funny.

If we loosen our chaps, there really is so much humor to be found in reality. I’m not saying jump out there as a Hurricane Katrina victim or anything, but…! Controversial is definitely going to gather a lot of attention.

Flight Attendant Costume

Daring enough to go the extra mile with the plus size flight attendant? How about turning her into a “trampled attendant”, with a few bruises, or maybe even a stab wound. Too much? Depends on the audience, I suppose. You could even cover her in tire tracks. Become the very daring flight attendant, that made her way onto the runway.

Plus Size Snow White Fairytale Costume

Disney wanted us to think Snow White was the apple of our eye. How about twisting the story with an apple in Miss White’s mouth, and a noose around her neck. I guess not all princesses live to meet their Prince.

Adult Tooth Fairy Costume

You know what happens to winged creatures that enter your home after hours? They get bludgeoned to near death.

Plus Size Tooth Fairy -home invasion!

 Plus Size Vintage Housewife Costume

How about a headless-housewife! That’s surely a statement.  Maybe stay away from the suburbs with this one…. :]

These are just a few creepy twists on your typical plus size Halloween costumes. With a bit of creativity, you can create your own unique statement! Good luck!

Last year it was Snookie from MTV’s Jersey Shore. This year, I have a feeling the streets will be scattered with glitter, towering heels, and meat?

Trick or Treat?

19 Sep 2011

We were trying to convince my 14 year old nephew to be a Carebear. My siblings and I set around the living room, working our creativity into group costume ideas. 1980’s cartoons kept popping up. Some how the older nephew was hit with “Carebear.” He’s a tall, built football stud with hair that would automatically get him a job with any surf company in Southern California. Even he realized the irony in such a costume. Maybe he is just secretly nostalgic for reruns of the bright fluffy bears.

It made me realize that the best costumes are the ones people least expect. Like telling a joke. People get a really belly laugh when you say something unexpected. With Halloween costumes, my favorites are always pieced together by hand. Usually something silly, or a costume that’s done so well that it becomes a piece of artistic expression.

A few years ago I was rushing around last minute. I had not a single idea in mind for Halloween. This led a friend and I into the closest thrift shop. After 5 minutes, I had found a long yellow sweater dress. A few red felt letters later….

Another bottle of Heinz mustard was created. In fact, a perfect costume for a plus-size woman like myself. Curves are a requirement in this case. Anyway, I enjoyed this costume because it was easy, glued by me, and a lil’ silly.

I’m personally a fan of creatively unique costumes, typically made from second hand goods. Yet, this year I’m seeing more and more options whipped up for the plus-size costumes. Some pretty good ones, too!

Zombie Prom Queen Costume

Zombies? ohhh yes!

Sally from the Nightmare Before Christmas never gets old.

I’ve picked only costumes that come from quality online plus-size shops. Even better, I know of a few coupons to get these double cheap. Plus-size coupons are a must for this Halloween! A little tip…Torrid & OneStopPlus.com have the best costumes at pretty wicked prices after these coupons. Good luck!

Halloween! (not to be confused with an Alexander McQueen runway show!) The only holiday in my book. A day with no expectations and no limitations. It’s that one recognizable day that we are truly free to be something or somebody else.

That is… unless you plan to dress up as Hitler. Really though, the day is nearing us. Creeper style.

I, for one, have been contemplating my costume. Hm…as of Halloween night, last year. Problem is, there are too many options nowadays. Many of them turned more sex appeal than actual creative reproductions. It seems like year after year, Halloween becomes just another excuse to dress up sexy and strut around in a meaningless ensemble. So, in no particular order, I’ve narrowed down some ideas into a list of my current top 10 plus size costume favorites! Some for the overzealous. Some for the easy.

10.To you, that may dress up as Beth Ditto…I bow to you.

9.

This one’s just funny!

8.

In the spirit of Hallows Eve.

7.

Plus size couples costumes? (I just had to) :]

6.

For the Telma in your Zelda dreams. [cosplay costumes are sooo good!]

5.

I don’t exactly know what this costume is…other than sexy! Either way…

4.

A preconstructed Steampunk costume? yes, please!

3.

I know it’s a lot to absorb and build, but given the resources I wouldn’t hesitate for a second. In fact, I don’t think there is a single costume idea from the musical “Wicked,” that I would deny!

2.

The only 3 words you ever need to know: Helena Bonham Carter! It doesn’t matter what character she plays, i will worship her for a lifetime. Another dauntless curvy woman I love.

1.

I don’t care who you are. If you don’t absolutely adore “Joan Holloway” from the t.v. show “Mad Men,” then we must have a serious sit down and some popcorn. Stat!

She’s confident, she’s crazy, curvy, and a whole lot of redhead. Plus, it takes only a few things to turn your anachronistic fashions into one sexy Joan. Here are the necessities. [After Barbie & Rick Moranis got a hold of them]

Sometimes it can be difficult to track down the “right” costume when you have curves. Get creative. Use your resources. Feel free to ask others. (Like me :) Most importantly…have fun!

Keep in touch as more plus size Halloween costumes appear, and this list gets narrowed down to a couple finalists. : }
