Street Style Travels!

28 Sep 2011

From Salt Lake City to Sacramento and now sunny Los Angeles, my train travels are on hold for a moment. Really though, would you be able to deny an extended Summer? Right now, it’s 96 degrees and bright as ever.

Yesterday I actually had to take a backpack full of my own plus size clothing down to the thrift store and swap for some lighter frocks. After a 4 mile bicycle ride to the city of La Verne, in wool shorts, and a sweater… I felt more like stripping down and taking a swim in the town fountain.

The train trip from home to LA, and everything in between has been one long, raised eyebrow. I have spent the last year in Salt Lake City, where I was introduced to the “hipster” style, first hand. I boarded the train, and 15 hours later ended up in California’s Capitol City: Sacramento. I then biked through downtown up to Sacramento State University, where I spent 2 hours at a poetry show. The whole time…not a single hipster in site! Even after a night out, then a week in Chico, another awesome college town….I was shocked. I saw one. Only one “hip” individual sporting the well known “ironic” style.

It wasn’t until after spending a day at the LA County Fair, then biking through multiple LA cities, and observing the La Verne college crowd -that i went ah-ha! I have come to the conclusion that thee “Hipster” is not dead. [Sorry America]

Southern California’s style is diverse and relaxed. Maybe it has something to do with the perfect weather, combined with the laid back mentality. Whatever it may be, the plus size women I have encountered and befriended, are incredibly down to earth!

First curvy beauty, Rachel Mckibbens! Gorgeous human being, inside and out. Look her up! Her poetry will change your life.

This particular evening, I was drawn to her tights. Remember Torrid’s purple leaf tights from my last blog? Yep! Same tights! I’m thinking Torrid should be contacting Rachel. She wears their plus size fashions so well.

After I left Sacramento, I spent days in a mountain town with no chance of catching any fashionable women under the age of 70. :D So once I hit the LA area, I was constantly on the lookout for beautiful, stylish, plus size women.

I believe her name was Zara. She was stunning, dressed in what she called her “most casual” style, and perfectly applied eye makeup.

I especially adored her shoes. Courtesy of the thrift chain, “Buffalo Exchange.”

I sat at a local coffee shop in La Verne, with an “interesting” green tea/espresso smoothie. This was the happening spot for curvy passersby. I met this lovely woman from China. She hardly spoke any English, and probably hardly understood mine. She caught my eye with her tunic top, authentically fabricated in her home country. I also admired her boots from Forever 21. It isn’t often that I see a curvy gal pull off a tucked jean look.

Sand colored boots are what’s “in” for plus size Fall fashions of Southern California. I particularly loved hers…

I am heading North next! Cannot wait to see what the Bay Area will bring. I’m sure it will be all sorts of sexy!

Classicly Twisted!

26 Sep 2011

The minute that I heard Kate Middleton was “bringing back hose,” I wanted to kiss her royal feet. I don’t know about you, but pantyhose should be every plus size woman’s best friend. It’s my go-to fix for smooth curves, and legs.

I’m not going to force feed you all one hundred reasons why I adore this (apparently) outdated accessory. I will say, though, I’m pretty sure my eye and my thighs have fallen in love with this season’s tights. A more modern cousin to the pantyhose. Not to mention, way more spicy. Poppin’ up in every color imaginable, they are my must have, absolutely need, gonna get 12 pairs…Fall accessory. Just sayin’. Heh heh.

I think I just spent two hours fishing the web for plus size tights. Phew. Imagine sliding an Art History book into your fingers, now close your eyes, and open to any one of the pages. That’s what it’s like! There are tights available in any print imaginable! Okay, okay…I’ll stop ranting, and just show you my favorites!

Crochet Purple Leaf Tights

See what I’m sayin’? That’s purple leaf print. Dreamy.

Aqua Diamond Fishnet Tights

The white is much more elegant, but still unique. I must say, Torrid’s plus sizes are always paired with the best shoes! These tights look great with an oxford, or even Fall’s hottest footwear…the bootie!

Avenue Plus Size Open Floral Tights (CAMEL,A/B)

I love the color mustard. It can be difficult to pair with if you aren’t accustomed to bright tights. Think earthy neutrals! I would love these with a tan or camel brown wedge.  Always remember…chic must be comfortable! :0]

Too Cute to Boot!

16 Sep 2011

I vowed to die of embarrassment if I ever wore these boots in public. Calf height suede, no heel, over poofed in fur with a beaded design on the toes. So much faux fur! It looks like I just slipped my feet into two foxes and started walking!

Some people call them “mukluks,” but honey I’ve seen mukluks. They don’t have to look like this.

So they became my comfy lounge boots for lazy days at home. Cozy little pillows for my feet. My new winter slippers. Then, one day…I did a silly little thing. It all started with a trip to the bank, then the grocery store…it was all over from there. I got way too comfy.

This year, I’m doing it right. Getting my boots before winter is on the crawl. And I mean cute boots! From trustworthy plus-size stores! I’ve already found a few favorites…

Storm Crinkle Perforated Western Ankle Boots (Wide Width)

Remember, it’s still Fall!  You can get away with light colors for a while longer. Torrid, the wonderful plus-size shop, has some of my favorite finds this season!

Roamans Plus Size Rocker Convertible Boots By Comfortview (RED,9 M)

Think of spicy red to pair with neutrals.  Next time you slip into curvy black leggings, try a bright ankle boot!

Toya Dusty Grey Lace-Up Combat Boot (Wide Width)

Knee boots are hot, hot, hot this Fall-Winter. I’ve seen them gracing the runways of  Michael Kors, most recently.

A great way to keep your legs warm and add a lot of character to your outfit!

Tasha Black Suede Over-The-Knee Flat Boots (Wide Width)

To warm feet & stylish boots! Ta-ta

It has recently been told that Mister Marc Jacobs himself, is popping up with a plus size fashion line. In the midst of Fall shopping, I automatically went into a day dream comatose when I heard the word. My fandom crossed all sorts of double yellow lines. I saw myself stooped outside his New York doorstep. Hot chocolate in one hand. My life savings in the other. All the while freezing to death as I wait for the gem of all winter dream coats.

Then I slapped myself out of it.

See…there are some “knock em’ dead” trends for every season. Then there are the necessities. Then there is…thee coat!

If done correctly, your Fall-Winter coat is that swirl of frosting on top of one perfect outfit. Like being wrapped in a warm, fuzzy cloud, with delicious written all over it.

As much as I would fully commit to saving myself for anything plus size from Marc Jacobs…I think it’s wise to pick up a cozy new coat for the chills to come. Plus, there are some seriously funky and fun coat trends this season!

Let’s see what I found! ;]

Faux Leather Military Jacket - Women's/Java - Size 20W

Leather! This Fall, it is the hottest trend among jackets and coats. Definitely turning heads. Especially when worn the right way! Wear it right above your hips, to make those curves pop. Or wear it long. Think leather trench coat. Any plus size jacket can be worn at mid-hip length. As long as the coat tapers at your waist, still defining your shape.

Avenue Plus Size Quilt Jacket with Removable Hood (RED,14/16)

Bold colors have made their entrance, and I have yet to see a bon voyage on the horizon. Just make sure to sport colors that flatter your skin tone, and your mood!

Jessica London Plus Size Denim Military Jacket (BLACK,16 W)

At ease, miss!

Every year military jackets are hot, hot, hot. This run around, you are bound to ditch the soldier, and just run away with the coat.

The long. The mod. And neutral enough for every outfit…ta da! My favorite coat this year!

A must have!

Somewhere between trench coat, and jacket. This plus size coat rides the lines. It’s ready for any occasion, and just looks so cozy!
Woman to woman. No way could I have afforded this dream coat without this OneStopPlus.com coupon. And no way could I possibly not share it with you ladies!

We all have guilty pleasures. There is no denying that!

Seeing as I’m home bound these days, getting life in order for a two month train trip all about the West coast. I’ve found a little freedom from thought inside the world of my Netflix queue. Lately, my guilty pleasure has been all wrapped up in this t.v. show called, “Drop Dead Diva.” A very girly, a very silly show, that I wouldn’t normally indulge in. Yet, I am hooked on the main character, “Jane Bingum,” and her style!  A fierce plus size woman, that incorporates classic career wear with eye popping accessories and does it oh, so, very well.

 (Brooke Elliott as “Jane Bingum”)

Jane, like myself, knows a good thing when she sees it. The figure flattering sheath dress in plus sizes, doesn’t fall short of that list. A major must have trend for Fall 2011!  Sheath dresses are made with the hour glass figure in mind, but don’t let that deter you. I just love this dress when paired with a belt, to bring attention to all different shaped waists.

Sheath dress with patent belt - Women's Plus Size/Black - Size 14,16,18,20,22,

There is one rule in the fashion of our lives. Never say never to something you love! Instead, find a way to tweak it so it works for you, and then flaunt it! Anything is possible with a little creativity.

That’s the fun part with this dress trend. You can take a well cut plus size sheath dress, and either wear it alone, or stir up your look with a neutral jacket or cardigan, an smaller purse,  maybe a clutch. Then  dazzle your way up with a few jewels. Wa-la!

Roamans Plus Size Abstract Print Jacket with Sheath Dress

This slimming dress is one of those crucial pieces in any plus size woman’s wardrobe. When you’re feeling classic, you can snatch a vintage clutch and some pearls, keeping it simple! Dinner party, the office, a work function, girl’s night out. I just love how versatile this plus size fashion favorite is! I actually picked up my own sheath dress recently. No way could I resist slipping into it for a few photos. This one’s a keeper!

I’ve been picking up great fall dresses with these new coupons!

I Say Paint it Red!

27 Aug 2011

Is your closet looking a bit gloomy, lately?

Studies show that the color red has abilities beyond what the eye concludes. Red is not only an alluring color, attracting other’s energy, but also a great way to give yourself that confidence boost! To me…it’s downright sexy! Now, I’m not one to snap into many bright colored ensembles, but red just does me in. Drawing up a bold feeling. A classic confidence that makes me feel as though I’m gliding above the streets, with a Mary Poppins sort of sass.

Of course, as with any color, over doing it can also intimidate your senses and stir up feelings of those around you.   Besides the rare occasion of going all red, or whatever the color may be. I tend to stick with pops of color, mixed with neutrals. This allows me to pull attention to certain areas of my body that I enjoy highlighting. Not only letting a plus size gal feel the strengths of a colorful outfit,
but also sexy in her curves.

Once your psyche is triggered by whatever hues you have fashioned together, particular senses within yourself become heightened. So the colors you wear become your feelings.

Say you’re feeling anxious lately…think about adding some blue to
your daily threads. Cool colors like blue and green calm your nerves,
creating serenity and nurturing your connection with the earth.

I’ve personally been sticking with brighter, warmer colors to pep up
my plus size style and my motivation.

Oranges, reds, and yellows! Yellow is an especially uplifting hue of
emotions. When you need a boost out of gloomy, yellow draws up the
optimistic side of your thoughts. Similar to the sun, yellow may offer
healing qualities when you need it most. :]

With the crazy days of life, we don’t often think about the way in
which our mood is affected by our style. How easily we can change our
spirits with a bright top, a cute belt, and a smile!

So enjoy this weekend with a lil’ color.

Yours, truly! xoxo

You know when you say something that maybe you weren’t quite ready to say, but it felt right in that moment? Then later on, through retrospect, you feel silly.

Yea… that’s kinda how I feel right now, as I lay on the grass, writing this in 85 degree sunshine. I’m wondering what I was thinking when I prematurely started talking and writing about summer hitting the road. See, I live in a place where the summers are mild and winter tends to kick all the other seasons out of bed a lil’ early.

With 95 degrees of burning rays projected for the high today…I’m ditching the calendar! And allowing myself to be drenched in everything summer!

Maybe I’m just a last minute kind of lady, but I’ve decided against letting the likes of cardigans and closed toed heels anywhere near my daydreams for a while.  Instead, I’m holding onto empire dress lines and opening a window into all of my favorite plus size trends of the moment.

Like  this one…

Belts! These waist cinchers never lose my fancy. And the color black is not a seasonal thing for me. It’s more like that go-to girlfriend that you pick up when life becomes a craze. A lifetime necessity. This time though, things were a little different…

Geometric everything is hot this summer, and I kinda got a little hot when I found this piece at Savers thrift store for only 5 bucklings.

I slipped my new geo-skirt over head, cinched it with a belt, and delicately shaded my eyes with vintage inspired sunglasses.

My roommate threw on some Dianne Reeves as we rolled through downtown with the windows up. Life felt like it was happening in slow motion. Like my animal print belt and movie star glasses gave me the curves of Mae West and a bit of Jane Russell’s sass.

For a minute there, it felt like we were just ridin’ through New York City…without a worry in our hearts…

Hello Everyone and Happy New Year!

I have just moved into a new, amazing apartment. While it has been stressful, moving has proven to be a great way to start the new year. I feel like I have a completely new slate for 2011 (which I think is going to be a wonderful year).

I am a little behind on checking out the January fashion magazines. New Year=New style. My fashion resolution for 2011 is to wear more skirts and dresses, and to develop a cleaner, more polished look.

Elle’s (which was officially just bought by Hearst…) January issue with Sarah Jessica Parker caught my eye. My first reaction was why exactly is she even on the cover…is there a new Sex and the City movie or something? The question of her relevance aside, her green dress is to die for.

Even before I saw this cover, I was going to write a post about green because I predict it will be the color of 2011.

Here is the perfect plus size green dress from Torrid:

Unless you live under a rock, you are aware of the devastating news: Prince William is officially off the market. This makes his fiance, Kate Middleton, the luckiest girl in the entire world. (While you cry yourself to sleep at night because your chances of being a princess are over, don’t forget about Prince Harry…there is still some hope).

The moment Princess Diana’s diamond and sapphire ring was planted on Kate’s finger, she not only became a princess-to-be, but also an international style icon. The latter was indicated by how fast the Issa blue wrap dress, the one she wore to announce her engagement, flew off the shelves of retailers.

nymag.com

We aren’t going to lie. We have definitely jumped on the Kate Middleton bandwagon! We love the ease and wear-ability of her clothing choices. She somehow manages to maintain that girl next door charm, while becoming royalty.

The best part of Kate Middleton’s style is, regardless of your body type- petite or plus size- you can get inspired by her. She mostly sticks to classic, solid colored pieces. Kate adds an elegant sophistication to the most plain items: jeans, cardigans, wrap dresses, blazers, and pea coats. Proving the cliche: style is not about what you wear, but how you wear it.  Everything looks better when worn with confidence.

The A-line silhouettes that she prefers also add to the simplicity of her appearance. Right, I know what you are thinking…I can’t wear an A-line…it will make me look pregnant. Wrong! As long as the A-line isn’t too poofy, it will look great, and accent your bust (depending on the situation…this could be a good thing)!

I also personally love that Kate rarely wears heels. I hate celebrities who act like their 7 inch stilettos aren’t killing their feet. Kate shows us that wearing ballet flats or simple boots can be graceful and feminine.

Channel your inner Kate Middleton in this Jessica London plus size wrap dress (on sale right now!):

Now that you have the dress, all you need is the rock, to complete the perfect outfit!
