I’ve seen brights in the color blocking stage and I’ve seen head-to-toe pastels, but pastels + brights is ready to make a grand entrance! Into my life that is. How about you join me?

(Big thanks to Andrew Fillmore Photography!!)

Spring makes me this happy. I’m finally beginning to feel comfortable in brights, but I’m waiting for Summer to bust out the vibrant hues. For the Spring prelude, it’s a toss up of the two. Stay tuned as the color blocking saga continues…

According to La Mode London this Summer’s catwalks are going to be bigger than ever. In a recent interview La Mode, London’s top model specialists, they were quoted as stating “‘This is 2012 and although, yes for the high end fashion market, a strict size and height rule is still adhered to for catwalk and fashion modelling, there are lots of companies promoting fashion shows which require plus size models and we’ve seen a surge in demand over recent months.”

I’ve seen a few runways filling up with “plus-size” women, and Plus Model Magazine has seen an explosion of interest with their “Plus Size Bodies: What’s Wrong With Them Anyways?” From ABC World News to the cover of USA Today, larger women are changing the dialogue about fashion and size acceptance.

Although I haven’t seen many women beyond a size 10/12 walking the runways, I can feel the tides shifting. As we all work together to continue to change our culture’s mentality, I believe we need to build our army stronger. If you’re curvy and above a size 12- consider plus size modeling!

(Model: Kimmi-K)

I recently discovered a growing company that supports not only an uncommon variety of sizes, but also ethnicities that I hardly see on the runways and in magazines! Check out Plus Model 411 for more resources into modeling.

Remember the really popular clothing company that was digitally pasting real heads over fake bodies? Yea, H&M feels that the virtual “body can better display clothes made for humans than humans can…”

I wonder how much money those fake beings spend at H&M every year?

So I was just itching to check out their Summer 2012 plus size collection. You’ll be pleased to know the models are very much real! The beautiful Tara Lynn is H&M’s one and only for this collection. Maybe because they have a whopping 19 items available. You’d think for a trend setting clothing company that rakes in billions of dollars every year, they would have multiple plus size collections. And designs that represent the current trends. It all feels plain, black, and baggy for this plus size Summer season.

What do you think of H&M’s plus size threads?!

Protecting Your Body!

11 Apr 2012

More than any other spot, I love being outdoors! Being a Ginger kid, I am easily reminded of the harm that comes with these beautiful Spring elements. I also vow to use natural products, because the least we can do is protect the Earth that provides so much for us! So I want to share with you some  of my favorite warm weather products that are chemical-free…

1. Kiss My Face brand “Sun Swat” is a 15 SPF sunscreen & bug spray. It works so well!! And that’s coming from a redhead!

It’s deet & paraban free too!

2. Dr. Bronner’s Organic Lip Balm- This is my must have for any season! It’s half the price of Burt’s Bees and is way more effective!

3. Honeybee Gardens “Truly Natural Mascara”- what’s better than a mascara that works, is not releasing chemicals in your eyeballs, and costs only $10.99?!?!

4. Desert Essence Jojoba Oil- I use this for everything! It’s non-comedogenic, which means it will not clog your pores. Jojoba is also an antioxidant loaded with Vitamin E, and is naturally anti-bacterial. To top it off, Jojoba oil doesn’t leave a greasy feeling so I use it as eye makeup remover!

Enjoy the sunshine, and remember that loving your body means caring for it!

There’s no denying this season’s reintroduction of bright colors canvassed over mod inspired designs.  And I’ve been dreaming up my own a-line skirts swirled with cat-eye glasses and a comfy pair of kitten heels…

Catch is…I like to remain as casual as possible while keepin’ the skirts a flowin.’ Pairing a tee and wedges with your favorite bright skirt is the best way to stay comfortable and sexy!

And when you just don’t feel like strapping into a belt- add some character by easily leaving that top button open, and pinning on a fun brooch!

Have a magnificent Monday, darlings

Over here at Plus Size Steals we have the honor to work with some really magnificent companies. Companies that literally began sprouting roots in their family garage with just a dream and a pair of hands.

You’ve seen my review of the Los Angeles based plus size boutique Sealed With A Kiss Designs! This time around, I’d like to share one plus size clothing line that takes my breath away with every part of their being.

Pronounced ”ee zhee zhee.” IGIGI was founded by Yuliya Raquel in 2000, and is based out of the San Francisco, California area. Each step involved in providing these gorgeous plus size fashions are created and finished in the Bay Area! IGIGI’s mission is: “to transform the world’s view of beauty. IGIGI creates sexy, stylish, and sophisticated collections of plus size clothing to be a major part of the lifestyle of a fashion-loving modern woman – her wedding, the parties she attends, her work, her fun, her fashion, her life!
Our designs accentuate and celebrate the beauty of the curvaceous female figure. A major focus of IGIGI is to provide our customer with the right fit for her body shape…”

IGIGI’s Spring 2012 collections are especially inspired by vintage designs. Naturally, I am falling even more deeply in love with them this season!

Enjoy & let me know what you think of IGIGI…?

“Happiness is the consequence of personal effort. You fight for it, strive for it, insist upon it, and sometimes even travel around the world looking for it. You have to participate relentlessly in the manifestations of your own blessings. And once you have achieved a state of happiness, you must never become lax about maintaining it. You must make a mighty effort to keep swimming upward into that happiness forever, to stay afloat on top of it.” –Elizabeth Gilbert (Author of Eat, Pray, Love)

This is how my brain feels when I begin running down new paths in life, or building fresh relationships. We all fall off-kilter sometimes. That’s the glory in being human. So I have chosen to share with you the things that keep me in tact, and I hope that you will be so kind in sharing some of the daily activities that keep your own wheel spinning.

plus size steals

1) Breathe- give yourself a break with your breathes. A beautiful friend and poet, Sarah, once told me, “Casey, we all do the best we can with what we have.” Remind yourself that if you’re working towards something, you’re making all the right decisions. They may feel icky in the moment, but those choices will lead you to a place you’re supposed to be.

2) Exercise- We’re taught to exercise for weight loss, but your mental health needs exercise for balance. Take at least a 15 minute walk everyday, because you are a beautiful person who is working towards your own internal wealth. You’ll begin to see exercise as a necessity and not such a dirty word. :]

3) Ax the past- the past has taken you to one place: right now. My thoughts often travel backwards so that I am allowed to second guess my words and sometimes feel embarrassed of them. Don’t! It already happened and there is absolutely nothing you can do to “fix” that. Use your past as only a tool to harbor a positive change for your future and for the moment you are currently working through.

4) Tell yourself how sexy you are- I have a friend that puts on a pair of red stilettos and struts around her house with a glass of wine in order to remind herself how great we can feel when we put our minds to it! I now do the same, because no one is around and all that sexiness is coming from within. It just needed a good pair of shoes to “keep on its toes.”

5) Give- I recently decided to paint my bedroom, so my friends have been plastering the walls with uplifting words. A dear friend wrote, “Focus on the out breathe- Everyone is happier when they care more about what they give than what they get.” Maybe it’s just a word of praise or going out of your way to give love through action. Do what you can for people. Everyone wins in these situations.

6) Write, Sing, & Scream- I don’t care how you get it out. You have to let it go. You cannot control how your body physically reacts to disturbing news, but you can control how you actively work to release it. Remember that you are able to handle only so much. Find what works for you and force yourself (if you have to) to squeeze those feelings out.

7) “My Body”- I’ve mentioned this one before in a past 10 Ways to Love Your Body blog, but it’s helped me incredibly. Create a list that starts with “my body” and mention the good things your body does for you. Hang this list in a visible spot that you’ll see it continuously. Even when I pass by the list and glance at the headline, my brain travels with those positive thoughts throughout the day.

8) Reach out- remember that we all have our good and our bad moments. The people in your life are there to support you through every one of those. If you give and you are gracious, you deserve exactly that in return.

As I said before I would love to hear some of the things that keep you on the up and up. Please feel free to share. Sending love.

Eye See You!

09 Mar 2012

If left alone with a makeup brush and a color palette…this is what I would look like. I mean I’m no Marilyn Manson but I could get the job done.

I’ve been quite lucky in my past 2 years as a plus size model. 1. No one ever let me handle any beauty tools during a shoot, and 2. I’ve had excellent makeup artists do me up right!

That also means I’m still learning my way around the makeup counter. As a gal who likes to make it from the shower to the front door in 30 minutes, I’ve learned a few tricks…

First off- get to know the shape of your eye. Become friends with your eye. Take your eyes out to dinner or the bowling alley. Really though, it’s just a quick couple minutes if you know what kind of eye lid you’re messin’ with here.

Quick tip- If you look like the Ghost of Christmas Past, (as I do) a swift swipe of your accent eye shadow will make it look like you’ve also laid down the highlighter and mid-tone. Out the door in seconds!
